There are moments in cycling history when everything changes – quietly at first, then all at once.
The transition from toe clips to clipless pedals is one of those defining shifts.
Today, the sharp, reassuring click of a cleat engaging is part of every ride. But in the early 1980s, the peloton still relied on leather straps and metal cages – efficient, but restrictive, and at times unpredictable in the heat of racing.
That changed in 1985, beneath the bold, unmistakable colours of the La Vie Claire cycling team.
When Greg LeMond joined Bernard Hinault at La Vie Claire, the headlines focused on rivalry and leadership. Yet the real revolution was taking place beneath their feet.
At the Tour de France, the team introduced the ground-breaking LOOK PP65 pedals, developed by LOOK Cycle and inspired by ski-binding technology.
For the first time, riders could generate consistent power through the full pedal stroke without the need for straps, while still being able to disengage instantly when needed.
LeMond was among the first to trust this new system in the sport’s biggest race. The results were immediate:
What seemed radical quickly became inevitable.
The 1986 Tour de France remains one of the most compelling in cycling history.
The internal rivalry between Hinault and LeMond unfolded across France’s most demanding terrain, culminating on the legendary slopes of Alpe d'Huez.
LeMond represented a new kind of rider – one willing to embrace innovation. Alongside his LOOK pedals, he rode the LOOK KG86, an early carbon fibre frame that hinted at the sport’s future direction.
When the two teammates crossed the line together on Alpe d’Huez, Hinault claimed the stage. But LeMond secured overall victory, becoming the first American to win the Tour de France.
It was more than a victory. It was a turning point.
Few kits in cycling history carry the same visual and cultural weight as La Vie Claire.
Inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian, its bold geometric design transformed the peloton into a moving canvas; modern, confident, and impossible to ignore.
But this was never just about aesthetics.
La Vie Claire became a symbol of progress – a team that embraced new ideas, new materials, and new technology when others hesitated.

For those who understand cycling’s past, wearing La Vie Claire is about more than style. It’s about connection to a defining era of innovation.
