The La Vie Claire team colours were based on the iconic artwork of Piet Mondrian, giving them a unique appearance in the peloton during the 80s.
Made in Italy, Santini have lovingly reproduced the 1985 version of this iconic jersey in modern fabrics for all to enjoy.
For those of you with an eye for detail, this extract is from Hinault`s biography 'Memories of the Peloton' (now out of print), which explains the background to the jersey design.
'We wanted it to be very distinctive and commissioned a designer from Benetton. The first idea was an all-black strip like the New Zealand rugby union team. We discarded is because we`d have baked under the hot sun of the Tour de France.
Then she came up with the idea of a jersey like a Mondrian picture, bright colours like yellow and red in a geometric pattern of differently sized rectangles. This was something of a revolution, which was just what we wanted. It was a symbol of our intention to stand out from the other teams and to brighten up the peloton.'
In a recent article on cyclingnews.com, Pietro Santini confessed that the La Vie Claire jersey was his all time favourite jersey design; 'That jersey was groundbreaking in terms of design and construction. Back then every jersey was plain with just a bit of embroidery on the sleeves and neck. The Mondrian design totally changed that so that each jersey was like a work of art. It totally transformed the way in which we made jerseys.'
